During my Bible study on Colossians 2: 20 I came across this wonderful paragraph from the book “Colossians: Be Complete”, by Warren W. Wiersbe.
“The power of Christ in the life of the believer does more than merely restrain the devices of the flesh: it puts new desires within him. Nature determines appetite. The Christian has the very nature of God within (2 Peter 1:4), and this means he has godly ambitions and desires. He does not need law on the outside to control his appetites, because he has life on the inside! The harsh rules of the ascetics ‘lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence’ (Col. 2:23 NIV). If anything, they eventually bring out the worst instead of the best.”
I would like to emphasize that the only way we can truly be successful in SPAM is if we don’t try to do it on our own but let Jesus do it through us. We should also keep in mind that we are not doing this to win favor with God or to be saved. God loves us no matter what, and His Son Jesus paid the ultimate price for our salvation when He died on the cross.
The only purpose of SPAM Fast is to draw closer to God and to look for the alternatives He has given us in place of what we are fasting from. He has many good things in store for us but we can’t see them because the things of this world has blinded our eyes. The more we spend time with God and dedicate our lives to Him the more our eyes will be opened and our minds clear to His heavenly treasures.
Let the Holy Spirit continue to lead and guide you during these times. Don’t let anyone tell you what you can and can’t do. Let the Holy Spirit tell you. When someone is warning you about a certain thing you enjoy that may be injurious to your spiritual and physical health, listen to them with a prayerful heart and do what the Holy Spirit impresses you to do that’s in accordance with the Holy Bible.
SPAM Fast is all about God, not about us.
